Bluewood Office Interiors is extremely proud to have completed a project to build a new Learning Resource Centre for Eastleigh College. This was a significant project carried out over an intensive 4 months during which we called upon nearly every trade in the industry and drew on every element of our expertise and services. The brief was to ensure the space could accommodate its many different audiences and work incredibly hard to create pockets for individual and group learning, as well as meeting zones and quiet spaces, all with an open-plan approach to provide a welcoming and inviting environment for learning.
We took part in a vigorous bid and procurement process and were chosen as the successful Contractor. After being awarded the contract, we presented floor plan layouts, design schedules for finishes and furniture, and CG images to bring the space to life based on our proposals. The process for finalising the end result was lengthy due to the many different functions required of the space, but once agreed, there were very few changes to the original scope. During the course of the project, we held weekly meetings on-site with key stakeholders to ensure everything ran smoothly and according to plan.
Design consultancy was paramount to ensuring we understood our client, both in terms of functionality for the space, its audience, and the preferred finished look. Once we had agreed on the design and space plan, we began the first stage of works, which was to carry out the internal demolition. A feature vaulted ceiling with automated roof lights was part of the requirement, so a cherry picker was drafted onto the site to perform this mammoth task. New ceilings, internal partitioning, and doors were built and installed to help us create a blend of working environments. The range was vast, and we created space for private and collaborative working, reading chairs and soft seated touch down points, individual meeting rooms for varying capacity, a reception desk and waiting area, an open plan office for a headcount of 30, and a small tea point.
There was also a requirement to split the space to create a temporary classroom or staff meeting point, so we arranged for the construction of a new 25m folding wall. Furniture choices had to provide for each of these functions with a considered approach to durability as well as present a clean, fresh look that was also inviting and inspiring. New air conditioning and LST radiators were installed with careful consideration and alignment with individual meeting rooms, offices, and partitioned sections of the space. Electrical and data points were installed, providing power and data to each of the workstations, the bespoke Reception Desk, and meeting rooms. Brand new flooring was laid throughout. A blend of carpeted and hard flooring was used within different zones to support acoustics and accommodate wear and tear within the areas of high footfall. Decoration was clean and fresh, using neutral tones. We brought colour to the space in the furniture finishes and branding. Structural pillars were incorporated into the final look and feel by displaying the college values and branded colours, and aligning the Learner Hub to other spaces within the college. We were delighted to be invited to the official launch and hand over the space, which we hope will bring joy to its users for years to come.
